FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Elytrigia repens, Common Couch, Húsapuntur

Elytrigia repens; Common Couch on Iceland is a weed in gardens, vegetable fields and waste areas. It has a strong uderground sytstem of stolons from which it van easily reappear after hoeing. One will not see it in natural vegetations. Apart from its ecological distribution the species can be recognized by their acute glumes, though lacking any kind of pinpoints, awns or whatever.

The Common Couch is a member of the grass family (Poaceae, also known as Gramineae). The Icelandic name of the Common Couch is Húsapuntur.
