FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Carex dioica, Dioecious Sedge

Carex dioica; The Dioecious Sedge is a rather small sedge (often no more than 10 cm, maximum 18 cm) which grows widespread on wet soils. In the south of Iceland it is more rare though. It is the only sedge species on Iceland that has either male or female flowers on one plant (hence the name "dioica"). So the spikes are unisexual. It is a member of the sedge family (Cyperaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Sérbýlisstör.
