FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Athyrium filix-femina, Lady-fern

Athyrium filix-femina; The Lady-fern is a fern which usually grows in lava hollows and also in woodlands. It is one of the larger fern species on Iceland. The fronds are usually about 40cm - uo to 60 cm. It is common in a few coastal regions around Iceland - more common in the western districts. I photographed this plant in the Snæfellsness district. The Icelandic name for this species is Fjöllauffungur.
