BIRDS OF ICELAND wigeon, Anas penelope

Anas penelope; the wigeon is a dabbling duck that is just a bit smaller than the mallard. The male has a characteristic red face with a yellow stroke over the top of the head. The female has a very dark patch around the eye, especially pronounced above the eye. This drakes produce a whistling sound unlike any other dabbling ducks. It breeds mainly in the northern regions of Iceland especially at Mývatn. It can be found to graze quite often on land (meadows).
